Government forcing online birth registration to prevent child marriage

The Bangladesh Government is forcing the birth registration to be made online throughout the country to prevent child marriage. By the end of July 2013 the information about all the citizen will be made available online through the online birth registration system.

Last month the officials in Khustia District successfully challenged the imminent marriage of a 15-year-old girl whose family were trying to conduct her marriage hiding her age. Officials demanded proof for verifying her age which her parents couldn't submit. So the marriage was not approved as legal.

The 2007, Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey recorded that about 66 percent of women aged 20-24 were married before they were 18 years old. This rate is high in rural areas. Issues such as endemic sexual harassment and high dowry payments contribute to continued high levels of early marriage.
